Blogger Interview: High Heels and Fairy Tales by Charlene Bhana

Hi everyone,

I love reading about what bloggers get up to, and this interview is awesome with Charlene Bhana because you get a little bit of everything when you read her blog as she focuses on mommy life, travel (mostly in SA) and lifestyle, its a great combination. If you are interested in what Charlene has to say then please keep reading.

What made you decide to start blogging?

I’ve always loved writing, so blogging felt like the natural direction for me to head in when I decided I needed to get the ol’ brain working again. I’d been entirely focused on breastfeeding, diapers, and nursery rhymes for so long; I wanted to do something “grown up” for myself, and that’s how I started blogging.

Describe your blog?

It’s a parenting, travel, and lifestyle blog. It’s my little space online where I share experiences that we’ve had (about parenting, and life in general); places that we’ve traveled; food that we‘ve tried and loved; and products that we think are awesome.

What is your inspiration in life, style, work, hobbies?

My parents have always inspired me – their humility, their generosity even when they didn’t have much, their love and care.

My husband, for his exceptional work ethic, his faith, and his loyalty.

My little girl, for her incredible kindness and goodness.

When you are not blogging, what do you do?

I’m a stay at home mom, and I homeschool my little girl. I have all the usual mom/wife stuff to take care of – feeding my little family, cleaning up, ballet runs. And on the rare occasion, I also help my husband out at the office.

What’s on your wish list for Summer/Special occasions/or just for the next few months?

I don’t think I have a wishlist. I have been wanting a great camera, and I’d love to learn how to take amazing photos. So I guess a camera and a photography course would top my wishlist.

What do you splurge on?

My little girl! Motherhood makes you selfless, I think. Shopping for myself is a distant thought these days, because gorgeous little person clothes and cute toys are what make me smile. I can spend hours in a toy store, and probably be even more enthralled than my little one with everything in there! 😂

Although, I do have a weakness for shoes, especially sneakers (I really should consider changing the “High Heels” part of my blog name to “Sneakers” haha), and I wouldn’t mind splurging on that more often.

What are you reading right now?<< ne Austen’s Pride And Prejudice. Again. It’s been closed with the bookmark saving my place for a while now though. There’s just never enough time. What is your favourite make up brand?<< e only makeup I wear regularly is lipstick. If that counts, then my favourite brand is MAC. Between the yummy candy smell, and the amazing colours, I’m hooked. What is your top five must have products?A pair of Converse sneakers

  1. A comfy pair of Nike Roshe Run/Air Max 90 sneakers, because sometimes you want something a little more sporty than your trusty Converse
  2. A pretty lipstick
  3. A good phone with a great camera, and loads of storage capacity
  4. A good tablet (it’s the iPad Pro for me)

Define your style?<< PJ chic a thing?... because that’s totally my style most days. 😁 We have PJs day at school A LOT! If I do have to leave the house though, it’s usually black leggings or jeans and something long on top, with - yep, you guessed it - sneakers. What makes you happy? Time with my guy and my little one make me happy.

Seeing my little one happy makes me happy.

Making my mom laugh makes me happy.

Travel makes me happy.

How do you define success? A life rich in love and laughter. That to me is true success.

Any tips for anyone who wants to start a blog? I don’t know how qualified I am to give blogging advice, but here are 2 tips I know I would’ve appreciated shortly after I started blogging:

  1. You’ll sometimes hear that you must find your niche and stick with that. Stay in your lane, as it were. This isn’t something I agree with. Your blog is just that, YOUR blog. It’s your space where you can talk about whatever inspires you. If you want to write a parenting post today and a fashion post the next day, then why not? I don’t think you need to follow these “blogging rules” (which aren’t even real rules btw), and end up not enjoying what you do.
  2. Blogging takes time and hard work. You need time to write, do spelling and grammar checks, edit, check again, edit pics… did I mention that you need to do spelling and grammar checks? Expect late night writing/editing sessions. This is why it’s important that it’s something you enjoy doing. Growing your blog takes time too. Loyal readers/followers will come… in time. 🙂
