Interview: Zayaan from Surviving the Madness blog

I’ve become acquainted with Zayaan by chance really, because i’m a “mommy” blogger there was a time when all i read was mommy blogs and this is how i got to know about Zayaan’s blog, Surviving the Madness, where she writes about life with a toddler, juggling working, blogging and parenting amongst other things. She is also about to become a mom for the second time… so we can definitely expect exciting new content in the future. For sure worth a read… but first see below what Zayaan has to say…

What made you decide to start blogging?

I wanted a place to record my son’s shenanigans growing up. It was also an easy way to share things with family who we don’t get to see often or who live overseas.

Describe your blog?

Besides it being a better way that those first year baby books to record my son’s milestones it’s also my journey of discovery as a mother. It’s a new role for me, I’m learning on the job and if sharing my thoughts can help other moms and if I can get advice from more experienced moms through my blog, then cool!

What is your inspiration in life, style, work, hobbies?

I am a Muslim so that is always my go to reference for all my actions. So you could say it’s my inspiration in life, style and work but really it’s so much more than that. It’s a way of life. We’re taught to treat others with kindness and respect. To be graceful and helpful.

When you are not blogging, what do you do?

I’m a content producer for by day and a mom, wife, daughter, gamer, reader and TV watcher by night and weekend.

What’s on your wish list for summer/Christmas/Special occasions/or just for the next few months?

My wish list is so long. I collect mugs and I really want a TARDIS or Le Creuset mug. I also want the new World of Warcraft expansion, Warlords of Draenor but I have to wait for that to go on sale. But the thing I’ve been eyeing lately is a DSLR camera.

What do you splurge on?

I might just splurge on the DSLR camera.

What are you reading right now?

I’m not reading anything right now which is strange for me but I just finished Neil Gaiman’s The Ocean At The End Of The Lane.

Who is your favourite local celebrity?

I love Suzelle DIY and Anne Hirsh.

What is your favourite make up brand?

I don’t wear every day and I only where full makeup if I’m going to a wedding or big event. But I get some things from the Body Shop and Woolies. And I got a whole bunch of Sephora make-up from my sister-in-law which I love.

Define your style?

It’s very casual and easy going. I’m a jeans and t-shirt kinda girl. I have very few high heels and tend to wear flat shoes: pumps, rider boots, sandals, All Stars. Comfort will always come first for me but that doesn’t mean I don’t like looking nice. Also I have a small problem with colour co-ordination.

What makes you happy?

My family especially my son and my niece’s and nephews. I also love the sun and swimming. I love travelling and seeing new places.

How do you define success?

A lot of people would assume that wealth equals success but for me success means happiness. I could’ve been a lawyer with a bigger salary but I chose to be a writer instead because it’s what makes my soul happy. I have an amazing husband and a beautiful son and our little family is a happy one. There will always be something more that yo have to have, something else to get but I think at the end of the day if you’ve lived a happy life, you’ve had a successful life.

Your philosophy is?

Just be a nice person, it’s really not that hard. I don’t stress about too many things, if someone isn’t actually dying you need to relax. Life is far too short to be stress over the little things. Appreciate the little moments, because they’re the ones that make life great.

Any tips for anyone who wants to start a blog?

Just go for it. Write from the heart, share what you want. It’s your space to explore with. It might not be the biggest thing (mine sure isn’t) but I’m not doing it for other people, I’m doing it for me.
