Interview: Charlene from Gee Whiskers

I’ve decided to start the blogger interview series again. If you know me you will know that i’m obsessed with reading (well more like stalking) SA blogs and YouTube channels. I have a few die hard regular blogs and channels that i go to everyday for a read/watch. Anyway, the first blogger that i decided to interview is so nice and her content mostly focuses on beauty reviews and traveling of SA. If you are interested in what Charlene has to say, please continue reading below.

What made you decide to start blogging?

I discovered beauty blogs around 2010 and started contributing my reviews on some local beauty review websites. I really enjoyed sharing my thoughts on things but felt restricted by the websites I was contributing to. So after a bit of deliberation and research I decided to create my own blog.

Describe your blog?

It’s a simple, happy space where people can come to read my thoughts on products. I don’t believe in writing negative reviews so the things I share on my blog are only things that I like or have enjoyed. Over the years, my blog has become more personal and I feature things that interest me, beyond just the usual beauty item review.

What is your inspiration in life, style, work, hobbies?

Inspiration for me is something that comes from within. I see all the great things that other bloggers are doing and enjoy it but only really feel motivated and inspired to blog when I feel I have something to say. It’s that way in my working life too.  When I believe I can make in impact or change something, I jump in and get things done.

When you are not blogging, what do you do?

I am a Senior Consultant specialising in Business Analysis but I am also involved in a lot of other things within the company I work for – line managing staff, mentoring, coaching and the recruitment of skilled people. I also like to present talks at universities and have presented at three Business Analysis conferences. I really enjoy all the things I get to be involved in and feel as though I am always learning and growing within my job.

What’s on your wish list for summer/Christmas/Special occasions/or just for the next few months?

My husband and I are heading off to Reunion Island at the end of October. We plan trips over our wedding anniversaries and this year will be celebrating 3 years of marriage. On my wish list is a helicopter tour over the volcano and island.

What do you splurge on?

Skin care products are my typical splurge. I believe if you have good skin you can wear less makeup. So I save on makeup and rather spend the extra on skin care products.

What are you reading right now?

I am not reading any books at the moment but love listening to podcasts. In particular I have been enjoying “Masters of Scale” and “50 things that have shaped the modern economy”.

Who is your favourite local celebrity?

I don’t really follow the celebrity scene so I honestly cannot answer this from a popular culture point of view but one person I really love following is Natalie Roos from Tails of a Mermaid. Her blog, Instagram and Twitter feed always keeps me entertained. She also seems like such a lovely person and it’s afraid to keep it real for her followers.

What is your favourite make up brand? Judging from my makeup collection – definitely Dior. I find their products to be so beautiful but I’ll admit that I have stopped purchasing their products because they are just too expensive. I however still like looking at their new collections and drooling over them.

What is your top five must have products?

BB Cream, Mascara, Blush, Lip Balm and Dry Shampoo

Define your style?

Comfortable, I guess – I don’t really have a style. Then it comes to clothing, I wear very simple things and it is very much around a capsule wardrobe. I don’t really like the clothing that is “on trend” and tend to go to the section of the store where the wardrobe staples are. I am a jeans and t-shirt kind of girl.

What makes you happy?

Definitely being around the people and animals I love. One thing I have really grown to appreciate is spending time with family.

How do you define success?

Success to me is setting a goal for yourself and achieving it to the best of your ability. If you can say you have learned something out of the whole experience and are better for it (learning through failure too), that is success to me.

Any tips for anyone who wants to start a blog?

Be true to who you are and what it is that you want to share on your platform. You can get so caught up in the blogging world and comparing yourself to what everyone else is doing – it can be very hard on a person and lead you to feeling inadequate. So focus on your space and making it what you want it to be.
