Book Review: The Goodness Gang Adventures with Food Lover’s Market

Food Lover’s Market (@foodloversmarket)are running an interesting campaign that focuses on teaching young children from Grade R to Grade 3 the meaning of healthy eating and the benefits of eating their fruits and vegetables. The group of friends called the Goodness Gang travels from Fruitlandia to Food Lover’s Market to meet children and teach them that eating healthy is good.

The girls and I decided to review this story book, its essentially an online book or an e-book and what’s nice about it is that you don’t have to worry about losing the book or the kids tearing the pages as they normally do. If you are interested in what the girls have to say, in their own words, just slightly tweaked so that it made a little more sense to you, then please keep reading.

What was the book about? Try to describe it in a couple of sentences.

Zia and Tazkia: There was a group of friends called Sally Strawberry, Adam Apple, Pumi Pea, Olly Orange, Benny Broccoli, Manny Mushroom, and Bongi Blueberry that went on an adventure to the supermarket shop Food Lover’s Market because they want to see the kids.

What was your favourite part of the story? Why did you like it?

Zia’s – my favourite part was the strawberry character and Tazkia – I liked the blueberry one. The girls thought the drawings were colourful and real. They liked the different places that the story had, and that the fruit and veggies got to ride on a big air balloon. The girls enjoyed colouring in the drawings that each story gave them.

Who is/are the main character(s)? Tell us something about them. What happens to them in the story?

The characters are fruit and vegetables, and go on an adventure to Food Lover’s Market. They go through different places like the Junk Food Valley, where all the junk food are bad for children, but they got through the valley by singing happy songs, and when they got scared they sing louder and louder until they were blasted out of the Junk Food valley by a big cloud. The friends wanted to go to see the friends to tell them that eating fruit and vegetables are nice because it tastes nice and good for you.

What sort of book was it? Was it a picture book, a chapter book, a fantasy book, a nonfiction book for sport fans?

It was a picture book showing us all the colourful fruit and veggies, and fruit and veggies are good for children.

If there are illustrations, how did they help tell the story?

They were showing us the pictures and fruit are healthy and makes us happy. But we only like fruit and not veggies.

Zia – I like broccoli, carrots, cucumber, pineapple, mushrooms, lettuce but I don’t like onions

Tazkia – I don’t like any vegetables L

Zia – I like strawberries, blueberries, bananas, apples, grapes, and kiwi

Tazkia – I like strawberries, apples, grapes and bananas

Did you like the book? Why or why not? What was good about it? Did any parts make you laugh? Which ones? Did you feel as if you were looking through the main character’s eyes?

We loved the book because it was awesome. Zia – it made me laugh when the kids decided to go to the market (not sure why this made her laugh). It was awesome because they played in the snow and they built a treehouse.
